Support Services for Children and Young People

There are many different services and organisations which can provide support and counselling services for children and young people. Some of these services are age specific, i.e. for young people, and some are available to any age. This page therefore provides parents and carers with more information about these services, what they can offer and how to contact them.

Parents and carers can contact one of the Children's Centres in the city for more advice and information about services for young children.

School Counselling Services

Contact your child's school to find out about any counselling services they may have. Alternatively the Youth Advice Centre and Young People's Centre also provide counselling services for young people.

National Support Services

Childline

ChildLine is the free helpline for children and young people in the UK. Children and young people can call them to talk about any problem. Tel: 0800 1111 or visit www.childline.org.uk/

NSPCC

The NSPCC have a load of information on their website about safety issues for children and young people. If you are ever worried about anything it’s a very useful site. You can either visit their main site at www.nspcc.org.uk or visit www.worriedneed2talk.org.uk/. The NSPCC also run a Child Protection helpline (Tel: 0808 800 5000) which you can contact if you have any worries or questions about someone’s safety.

Supportline

www.supportline.org.uk/ Supportline offer confidential emotional support to children, young adults and adults by telephone, email and post. They work with callers to develop healthy, positive coping strategies, an inner feeling of strength and increased self esteem to encourage healing, recovery and moving forward with life. They also keep details of counsellors, agencies and support groups throughout the UK.
