Respecting yourself and self esteem are very important things in life. But sometimes it’s hard to get there.

"He/she probably has low self-esteem," I bet you've heard someone say that before. But what does self-esteem actually mean?

Basically, self-esteem is how much you value yourself. Most people have days when they value themselves a lot, feel confident and believe in themselves. Likewise, most people have other days when they have some doubts and are unsure of their worth or ability.

Some people have low self-esteem a lot of the time, often due to being put down by others, or having unrealistic expectations which they never achieve. Constantly comparing yourself to others can give some people low self-esteem. Looking at others and thinking 'why can't I be like them?' is a sure-fire way to make yourself feel bad.

It is always important to respect yourself and value yourself as a person, no matter what is said or done to you. If anyone puts you down and says horrible things to you, you should never believe them, they’re usually only doing it because they have a problem and they just want to make themselves feel better and superior by putting others down.

By respecting and feeling good about yourself you increase the likelihood of good things happening to you, empowering and helping you to become the person which exists inside.
